GCSEs and A Levels Are Over – Now Is the Perfect Time for Teens to Learn Skills for Life

The exams are finally finished.

After months of revision, coursework, mock exams and stress, our teens are looking forward to a well-earned summer break and us parents are breathing a sigh of relief!!

But while it’s important for teens to relax and recharge, the long summer holiday also offers a fantastic opportunity to develop practical life skills that will benefit them for years to come.

And, in my opinion, one of the most valuable skills any young person can learn is how to cook confidently and independently.

Cooking Is One of the Best Life Skills a Teen Can Learn

Whether your teen is preparing for their Duke of Edinburgh Award, heading off to university in the next few years or simply becoming more independent, cooking is a skill they’ll use every single day.

Learning to cook helps withe the following:

  • Build confidence and independence
  • Understand nutrition and healthy eating
  • Manage a budget and reduce food waste
  • Develop organisation and time management skills
  • Learn responsibility and self-sufficiency
  • Contribute to family life

And perhaps, best of all for busy parents, they can start taking charge of dinner a couple of times each week … I cannot however guarantee that they will tidy up after themselves!! If they are anything like my son, there will always be signs that they have ben active in the kitchen!!

Imagine coming home after a busy day to find that your teen had planned, prepared and cooked a nutritious meal for the family.

Turn Summer Downtime Into Something Meaningful

The summer holidays can quickly disappear in a blur of screens, social media and late mornings.

My online cookery courses give teens a positive, practical activity they can complete at their own pace from home.

Rather than spending the summer saying “I’m bored” or spending hours doom scrolling in bed, they can learn skills that will genuinely prepare them for adult life.

By the end of the course, they’ll have mastered a range of recipes, developed kitchen confidence and gained skills they’ll continue using long after summer ends.

Perfect for Duke of Edinburgh Participants

For young people completing their Duke of Edinburgh Award, my DofE Kitchen course has been specifically designed to support them in developing practical cooking skills.

Students learn how to prepare a variety of meals while building confidence in the kitchen and demonstrating commitment to learning a new skill.

The course provides a structured and enjoyable way to work towards their DofE Skills section while creating something useful that benefits the whole family.

Many parents tell us that one of the biggest benefits is seeing their teenager become more capable, independent and willing to help around the house.

Getting Ready for University Starts Earlier Than You Think

If your teenager has recently completed A Levels, university may be just around the corner.

One of the biggest shocks for many first-year students isn’t the academic workload—it’s having to feed themselves every day.

Takeaways and ready meals can quickly become expensive, unhealthy and repetitive.

Learning how to cook before leaving home gives students a huge advantage. Through my course, they will arrive at university knowing the following and you can be reassured that they are eating well at least some of the time!

  • Cook affordable meals from scratch
  • Shop on a budget
  • Store food safely
  • Plan meals for the week
  • Eat well without overspending

These are practical skills that save money, improve wellbeing and make the transition to university life much smoother.

Trusted by Hundreds of Families

Over 700 students have already completed my cookery courses, and we’re proud to have received 5-star reviews from families across the UK.

Parents consistently tell us how impressed they are with the confidence, independence and enthusiasm their teenagers develop through learning to cook.

It’s not just about recipes—it’s about giving young people the skills they need to thrive in adult life.

Give Your Teen a Head Start This Summer

The summer holidays are the perfect time to invest in skills that will last a lifetime.

Whether your teenager is working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award or preparing for university, our online cookery courses provide practical, enjoyable and confidence-building learning from home.

Instead of simply counting down the days until September, help them spend the summer developing independence, responsibility and real-world skills.

After all, every teenager should know how to cook a great meal—and every parent deserves a couple of nights off dinner duty!
