Growing your own!

I have really grown to love my garden during lockdown and have taken to growing some fruits and vegetables: there really is something rather special about eating fruits and vegetables that you have grown.  It’s amazing what you can grow in containers or in those little spaces of underused garden!

I have herbs, chilli plants, lettuce, spinach, beetroot and tomatoes growing in my large planters; mint, more chilli plants and carrots growing in pots; yet more chilli (a friend had a surplus and passed them on) in my window box; some rhubarb in the ground and then our lovely apple tree!

And I am beginning to learn that July is a month of abundance for gardeners; the month where you can really enjoy the fruits of your labours.. we are currently in the midst of a lettuce glut!  But, don’t despair if you are late to the gardening party… the planting season is far from over and it’s not too late to plant some seeds.

During July you can sow the following directly into the soil:

  • Kale
  • Chard
  • Mustard greens
  • Brussels sprouts (for a spring harvest)
  • Cabbages (for a spring harvest)
  • Cauliflowers (for a spring harvest)
  • Leeks
  • Broccoli
  • French beans
  • Lettuce
  • Beetroot
  • Carrots (late varieties)
  • Turnips (late varieties)
